On Friday, February 13th, 2026, Kwararafa University, Wukari (KUW) matriculated 503 fresh students into its 15 NUC accredited undergraduate programmes, marking the institution’s 21st matriculation ceremony since its establishment in 2005. The colourful event, held at the University’s main campus in Hyuku, Wukari, Taraba State, drew members of the University management, staff, parents and well-wishers who gathered to formally usher the new students into the academic community.
Founded as the first university in Taraba State and recognised as a community-promoted institution in sub-Saharan Africa, Kwararafa University has continued to position itself as a hub for quality private education in Nigeria’s North-East region. Over the years, the institution has produced graduates who are contributing meaningfully to national development across diverse sectors, leveraging digital competence and technological innovation to remain competitive in today’s workforce.
Delivering his matriculation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shishi Zhema, congratulated the students on securing admission and assured them of the University’s commitment to academic excellence and student-centred learning. He emphasised that the institution prioritises the welfare and success of its students. “Thousands of students have enrolled and graduated from our University across many disciplines and spread through different walks of life for over two decades, excelling in their chosen careers. Kwararafa University is poised to continue to offer knowledge seekers the exceptional privilege and platform to unlock their potential; thereby, building dignified personalities and resourceful professionals who will be worthy ambassadors of this great citadel of learning,” he said.
Prof Zhema added that, “You must be law-abiding citizens of the country and respectful of persons within and outside the University community. Ensure that you do not abuse the freedom you have; rather, embrace self-control, diligence and confidence. Stay away from vices and espouse virtues that will enable you to stand out before and after graduation.”
While concluding his speech, the VC also announced that in October 2026, the University is set to admit students into the Department of English and Literary Studies (with specialisations in Language, Literature or Film Studies), as well as the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies under the new College of Arts and Humanities established in 2025.
The Matriculation ceremony climaxed with the formal oath-taking by the matriculating students, symbolising their acceptance of the University’s rules and ethical codes. Parents and guardians expressed gratitude to God and appreciation to the University management for offering their children admission into what they described as a conducive environment for learning.
Earlier on Thursday, February 12th, 2026 during the orientation programme preceding the Matriculation ceremony, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Ifeoma Catherine Onwugbufor, underscored the importance of discipline, focus and hard work as prerequisites for academic success. She urged the new intakes not to allow distractions on campus to derail their aspirations, stressing that the University is reputed for quality delivery and strict adherence to academic standards.
The Matriculation ceremony reaffirmed the institution’s resolve to sustain its legacy of nurturing responsible, skilled and globally competitive graduates for Nigeria and beyond.
