By Stephen Victor Gana
Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, has recorded another significant milestone in its pursuit of innovation and technological advancement as Engr. Dr. Tanko Bako represents the institution at the international grand finale of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 and Global Investor Showcase in London, United Kingdom. Dr Bako has showcased his innovation titled “Compressed Pure Biogas Production from Organic Wastes Using Biological Inoculation and Mechanical Filter Media” at the event, which brings together innovators, investors, government representatives, distinguished speakers and other stakeholders from across the world. The grand finale held on Friday, 9 October 2026, at the Platinum Suite, ExCeL London.
Dr Bako’s participation in this prestigious international event follows his successful progression through the preceding stages of the competition, earning him a place among the innovators presenting their ideas at the grand finale. His innovation focuses on converting organic waste into compressed, purified biogas through biological inoculation and mechanical filtration, offering a potentially valuable approach to waste management, renewable energy production and environmental sustainability. By exploring ways to transform organic waste into a useful energy resource, the innovation aligns with broader efforts to promote cleaner energy solutions, encourage sustainable practices and address environmental challenges through scientific research and technological creativity.
In recognition of his achievement in reaching the international grand finale, Engr. Dr Tanko Bako was presented with an Award of Excellence by NextGen, in collaboration with the UKALD and other international development partners. The award recognises his accomplishment in advancing through the competition to the final stage, further highlighting the significance of his innovative contribution. This recognition adds another dimension to TSU’s participation in the global innovation platform, celebrating not only the ingenuity of the researcher but also the potential of Nigerian university-based research to gain international attention and recognition.
This achievement also highlights the innovative vision and strategic leadership of the Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, and his management team. Through their commitment to promoting creativity, research, technological development and practical solutions to societal challenges, the university continues to create opportunities for its academic community to contribute to global conversations on innovation and sustainable development. Dr Bako’s presence at the international grand finale represents an important opportunity to showcase the intellectual capacity of TSU and demonstrate how university-based research can contribute to addressing real-world problems while opening doors to international partnerships and investment opportunities.
As the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 brings together innovators and potential investors in London, the participation of Taraba State University reinforces the importance of connecting academic research with industry, investment and global development priorities. The university community will be keenly following Dr Bako’s presentation and the outcome of the grand finale, hopeful that his innovation will attract further recognition, strategic partnerships and opportunities for development and commercialisation. His achievement, further distinguished by the Award of Excellence, is a source of encouragement to researchers, lecturers and students at TSU, which proves that ideas developed within Nigerian universities can earn places on international platforms when supported by commitment, creativity and an enabling institutional environment.
